Salvatori talks to Yabu Pushelberg about the new texture

Ahead of Milan Design Week 2025, Salvatori offers a sneak peek at Nagi, the brand-new texture designed for the Italian brand by Yabu Pushelberg.

The first of a series of exciting products that will debut at the Italian brand's Brera showroom in April, Nagi is a natural stone finish featuring delicate undulations that call to mind the ripple effect caused by a stone hitting water. Replicating the effect of concentrated circles emanating from the centre and gradually becoming less intense, the texture captures the natural, gentle rhythm of the water. The word "Nagi" (凪) comes from the Japanese language and describes the quietness of the sea and the tranquil, lulling sensation it creates.

Nagi is conceived as a 586x292-mm rectangular tile with a wavy motif that is more compressed on one side and then gradually opens out, creating wider, softer ripples. It can be laid on either side, either horizontally or vertically. The beauty of the design lies in the fact that the short sides of the tiles start and finish at the same height, thus providing scope to pair them in different ways. The result is a spontaneous, dynamic pattern that reflects the changing light throughout the day in a fascinating three-dimensional interplay of wavy lines.

Nagi is available in Salvatori's trademark palette of marbles and limestones: Bianco Carrara, Crema d'Orcia Select, Pietra d'Avola, Silk Georgette®, Verde Antico, Verde Guatemala and Placido Paradiso.

Can you tell us a little about the texture? What was the inspiration behind it?
The texture draws inspiration from the ripples that form when a stone disturbs still water. Gradually shifting from dense to open, the tile mirrors the natural movement of water, capturing the rhythm of water in motion.

What’s behind the name?
In Japanese, Nagi describes a serene state at sea with connotations of calmness and tranquility. Like ripples forming on still water, it resembles a pattern shaped effortlessly by nature.

Design and natural stone: how do they come together in this project?
Translating the movement of water into solid stone is a reflection of Salvatori’s ethos—crafting pieces that exist in spaces shaped by water. From bathroom vanities to sinks, wall textures, and floors, this product celebrates the essential relationship between water and stone.

How does Nagi fit into the design journey between Salvatori and Yabu Pushelberg?
The collaboration between Salvatori and Yabu Pushelberg is a natural and organic relationship—just like the design itself. Stone isn’t born from a formula, yet its use in built environments is often rigid and repetitive. Nagi challenges that notion. Its ability to be mirrored or staggered creates a fluid, serendipitous pattern.
