A country home in Copenhagen
Minimalism. The true nature of Scandinavian design.
The true nature of Scandinavian design goes far beyond mere minimalism. The pale colours, ample use of space and light and coolly sparse, pared-back style which generally spring to mind don’t necessarily reflect the true depth and soul of the movement.
Defined early on by the likes of renowned designers and architects such as Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen and Hans J. Wegner, Scandinavian design had its starting point in the early twentieth century as a vehicle for championing the homespun arts and crafts that were proliferating in Nordic countries at the time.
Protagonists in Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland collectively began working towards a new style that emphasised functionalism, craftsmanship and natural, honest materials. Greatly influenced by the teachings of the Bauhaus, this ethos was expressed in the form of buildings, furniture, textiles and even industrial goods.
A century later, contemporary designers are still interpreting and reinterpreting Scandinavian style, honouring not only its aesthetic, but also its profound respect for materials and craftsmanship, both of which prevail in this project designed for a Danish client who wanted to create a country-house atmosphere in Copenhagen. The clean lines, pared-back, clutter-free ethos, neutral tones and artful use of light leave little doubt as to the guiding style.
In the bathroom the soft tones of Crema d’Orcia limestone in Stone Parquet and the muted grey of B-Fish texture on the wall remain faithful to the Scandinavian design style book, as does the deceptively simple cylindrical form of the Adda basins. Wood and natural stone are seamlessly combined to create an atmosphere which is at once cocooning and stylish.
In the bedroom the rich dark tones of Pietra d’Avola bring depth and sophistication, seen in the headboard with its CNC texture and Dritto side table and Ciane bedside cabinet. Cool, elegant contrast comes in the form of an Urano lamp, sculpted from a single piece of classic Bianco Carrara marble, and other accessories which encapsulate the spirit and principles of Scandinavian design.
